Niyyah – Intention

Niyyah (Arabic: نِيَّةٌ) is an essential concept in Islam. It refers to the intention in one’s heart to perform an action for the sake of God (Allah) 1. Here are some key points about niyyah:

  1. DefinitionNiyyah represents the pure intention behind an action. It is the internal commitment to perform a deed with sincerity and devotion to God.

  2. Quranic Basis: The general Islamic principle of niyyah is laid out in Chapter 33 (Al-Ahzab) of the Quran, specifically in Ayat (Verse) 5:

“There is no blame on you for what you do by mistake, but (only) for what you do intentionally. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

  3. Hadith: The Prophet Muhammad emphasized the significance of intentions. ‘Umar b. al-Khattab narrated that the Prophet said:

“Deeds are [a result] only of the intentions [of the actor], and an individual is [rewarded] only according to that which he intends.”

  4. Application:

    • Salat (Prayer): Before commencing the ritual prayer (salat), a Muslim must have niyyah. Although it does not have to be audibly uttered, it is spoken from the heart.
    • Hajj (Pilgrimage)Niyyah is also essential to begin the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.

In summary, niyyah reflects the sincerity and devotion with which Muslims approach their acts of worship. It is a reminder that true worship goes beyond mere external actions—it begins with a pure heart and intention
